Description
Abraham Lincoln Military Appointment Signed "Abraham Lincoln." One partially printed page, 13.25" x 17.5" (sight), Washington, D.C.; February 24, 1863. Appointing "Myles Moylan...Second Lieutenant in the Fifth Regiment of Cavalry." Countersigned by Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War. With docketing and a green paper seal at the top left. Patriotic vignettes at the top and bottom margins. The document has been matted and framed with a large black and white photograph of Lincoln and three information plaques to the overall size of 35.5" x 33".Myles Moylan (1838-1909) fought at numerous key battles during the Civil War, including Wilson's Creek, Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, and Gettysburg. In October 1863, Moylan was dismissed from the cavalry for being absent without leave. He then re-enlisted with the 4th Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry under the alias Charles Thomas in December 1863. After the war, Moylan fought in the Indian Wars and was present at the Battle of Little Bighorn and at the Wounded Knee Massacre. On September 30, 1877, Moylan was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Hayes for his "extraordinary heroism" at the Battle of Bear Paw, Montana Territory.
Condition: Flattened folds, with soiling at the folds. Spots of toning and staining. Creasing and warping at the top edge. General wear to frame.
