    Description

Abraham Lincoln Military Appointment Signed. One partially-printed page, 14" x 18.75", Washington, May 18, 1863. The president here appoints "John W. Roder . . . Brevet Second Lieutenant in the Second Regiment of Artillery." Countersigned by Edwin M. Stanton as secretary of war. The ink is faded to the point where it is nearly illegible. Both signatures are also beginning to fade. There is significant paper loss in the form of wormholes, mostly confined to the upper and lower horizontal folds and the main vertical fold. One small hole does touch the lower portion of the "ln" in Lincoln's signature. Spots of staining are seen at the left edge with some waterdamage at the right. Chipped edges.
