Description

Abraham Lincoln Military Appointment Signed. One partially-printed vellum page, 14" x 18" (sight), Washington, April 27, 1864, appointing "Edwin J. Farnum . . . Assistant Quartermaster of Volunteers with the rank of Captain." Countersigned by Edwin Stanton as secretary of war. Seal of the War Department at upper left. Smoothed folds and very clean; with small wormholes at top left. The document has been examined out of the mat and measures 15.2" x 19.5". It is mounted with the use of paper corners only, with no adhesives touching the actual document. Matted with a portrait of Lincoln to an overall size of 32.5" x 25.25".

Farnum, a native of Illinois, enlisted in the Union Army six days before this appointment. He served in the quartermaster's department until May 19, 1866, when he mustered out of the army.
