Description
Abraham Lincoln Military Appointment Signed "Abraham Lincoln." One partially printed page, 15.75" x 19", Washington, D.C.; March 18, 1864. Appointing "William L. Shuttleworth...Major in the Marine Corps." Countersigned by Gideon Welles as Secretary of the Navy. With the red seal of the Department of War at the lower center. Decorated with handsome engraved military and patriotic vignettes. Together with a colored engraving of Lincoln.William Louis Shuttleworth (1812-1871) served in the Mexican War and commanded the Minnesota at the start of the Civil War. He aided in the capture of Fort Clark and Fort Hatteras, and won the praise of Major General Benjamin Butler. In early 1863 he was assigned to Pensacola, Florida and was placed in command of the navy yard there. In 1865, he was given command of the marine barracks at Brooklyn Navy Yard, a position which he held until his retirement in 1869.
Condition: Flattened folds, light toning and folds, soiling at the folds with some separations and small holes. A small amount of paper loss at the left center edge.
