Description

Abraham Lincoln: Legal Document in His Hand. 8" x 12.25" manuscript document on blue lined paper, n.p., filed October 11, 1854, text completed in the hand of Abraham Lincoln, but signed by David Davis. The content involves a divorce decree between Rowena and Sidney Ames. A jury met, heard the evidence and found the defendant "guilty of extreme and repeated cruelty to the complainant, in manner and form as charged in the Bill of Complainant... and that the bonds of matrimony... be henceforth and forever dissolved... the question of alimony herein is continued to the next term of this court." There are nineteen lines in Lincoln's hand. Davis would serve as Lincoln's campaign manager in 1860, prior to his appointment as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
