Abraham Lincoln: Endorsement Signed Re: Controversial Trial of Subversives. Telegram from Indiana Governor Morton addressed to President Lincoln, "Office U. S. Military Telegraph War Department" telegraph form, November 11, 1864, 7.75" x 10" on one side of the sheet. The Governor requests a promotion and compensation of expenses for "... Maj. H. L. Burnett who has been prosecuting the treason trials in Indianapolis against Dodd Bowles & others..." The President has endorsed the letter, as follows: "Submitted to the Sec. of War. A. Lincoln Nov. 14, 1864." Currently secured between two pieces of glass, fitted for suspension.

Indiana was "ground zero" for anti-war secret societies, such as the Knights of the Golden Circle and the Order of Sons of Liberty. William A. Bowles was a recruiter for the former while Dodd was the Grand Commander of the OSL. Besides organizing secret militia units, Bowles was suspecting of meeting with Confederate operatives and offering aid for John Hunt Morgan's raid into Indiana. Dodd and Bowles were arrested along with three other men and tried before a military tribunal in Indianapolis in September-October 1864 on charges of treason, accused of a plot to liberate Confederate P.O.W.s, supply them with arms and foment insurrection. Dodd was found guilty and sentenced to hang, but escaped to Canada. Bowles shared the same fate, but his sentence was commuted by President Johnson. Their case came before the Supreme Court in Ex parte Milligan which ruled that their military trial was unconstitutional, since civilian courts were active and available at the time. All the condemned men were thereupon released from prison. At this point in time, Lincoln had been reelected and the war was winding down to a successful conclusion. A most interesting chapter from Civil War history.
