Description
Abraham Lincoln Consul Appointment Signed as president and countersigned by Secretary of State William Seward. One page, 20.25" x 15.5", "City of Washington," February 23, 1864, appointing merchant Henry J. Cuniffe of New Mexico "Consul of the United States of America at Paso del Norte." The document entreats "the Government of Mexico" to permit Cuniffe "fully and peaceably to enjoy and exercise the said office." A blind-embossed U.S. seal exists in the lower left corner. The appointment exhibits age toning, some dampstaining, and foxing. A few holes occur where folds intersect. Some separations are beginning at some folds. (One such separation affects William Seward's signature.) President Lincoln's signature remains in bold ink, though dampstaining affects the "Abra" in "Abraham."Auction Info
