    Description

Abraham Lincoln Carte de Visite Photograph Taken by Mathew Brady Signed "A. Lincoln." 2.5" x 4". The president is seen in profile in this iconic vignetted portrait. This image presented here was used to recreate Lincoln's visage on the penny. Mathew Brady's "National Photographic Portrait Galleries" backstamp on verso. The president has boldly signed his name directly below his image.

On Tuesday, February 9, 1864, three days before his 55th birthday, President Abraham Lincoln posed for this photograph and six others at Mathew Brady's Washington studio for perhaps the most elaborate sitting Lincoln ever granted the celebrated photographer. Other images taken that day were used for the five dollar bill and numerous postage stamps. The famous photograph of Lincoln, wearing spectacles, looking at a book with his ten-year-old son, Tad, was also taken that day.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
