On Tuesday, February 9, 1864, three days before his 55th birthday, President Abraham Lincoln posed for this photograph and six others at Mathew Brady's Washington studio for perhaps the most elaborate sitting Lincoln ever granted the celebrated photographer. The famous photograph of Lincoln, wearing spectacles, looking at a book with his ten-year-old son, Tad, was also taken that day.
