    Description

    Abraham Lincoln Brigadier General Appointment Signed as president and countersigned by War Secretary Edwin M. Stanton. One partially-printed vellum page, 14" x 17.5", "City of Washington," April 15, 1863, appointing Lysander Cutler "Brigadier General of Volunteers." With military and patriotic vignettes and a light blue Department of War seal in the upper left. Folds. Signatures are very clear.

    Lysander Cutler (1807-1866) was Maine businessman when the Civil War began. During the war, he fought at the battles of Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness and others. He resigned from the army in June 1865.
