Description
Abraham Lincoln Autograph Note Signed "A. Lincoln." Small slip, 2.75" x 2.25" (sight), February 16, 1864. Abraham Lincoln writes to Edwin Stanton transmitting a letter concerning the release of a Confederate prisoner. Lincoln writes, in full: "Will the Sec. of War please oblige Judge Catron in this matter. A. Lincoln. Feb. 16, 1864."The matter Lincoln was referring to was a plea from John Catron, an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, for the release of a Confederate prisoner by the name of Abram Shute. Catron's letter, 4.5" x 6.75" (sight), February 15, 1864, addressed to Marshall Ward Hill Lamon, reads in full: "There seems to have been sent from the war office an order for the release of Abram D. Shute, but it was directed to Louisville, & of course to the officers there. I wish it to be renewed - or rather a release & pardon sent for Mr. Shute to Rock Island. (On verso) Barracks no 47. I will feel very much obliged if you will attend to this matter for me. With sincere regard, yr obt Servt. J. Catron."
Lamon, a close friend and bodyguard to Abraham Lincoln, passed Catron's request on to the president. At the time, an outbreak of smallpox was plaguing the prisoner of war camp at Rock Island, Illinois, which would claim the lives of 770 Confederate prisoners. Although Catron opposed secession, he also supported slavery and sympathized with the plight of the Confederate soldiers at Rock Island. He reached out to Lincoln on two other occasions about the release of prisoners. Abraham Lincoln's agreement to release such prisoners is a demonstration of his compassion as president.
The endorsed note and letter have been matted and framed in a custom-hinged frame that allows one to see the reverse of the Catron letter. This frame is mounted with an image of Lincoln and two descriptive plaques to the overall size of 33.75" x 22.5".
Condition: Lincoln's note has a line of separation along lower margin; affects a portion of Lincoln's signature. Has some ink transference. Catron's letter has usual mail folds, vertical line of separation, ink transferences. Overall very fine.
