    Abraham Lincoln Autograph Note Signed "A. Lincoln." 3.25" x 2.25", February 20, 1865. The note reads, "Let this man take the oath of Dec. 8, 1863 & be discharged. A. Lincoln/Feb. 20, 1865." Just two months after Lincoln wrote this note, he was shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater.

    Lincoln's note is accompanied by the original letter from H. Williams, the surgeon requesting the prisoner's discharge. Williams' February 1865 letter to Lincoln from Alton Military Prison in Illinois reads, "At the request of the Inspector of the Prison and the friends of the applicant I made a careful examination of Mr. G.J. Hans, and reported to the Inspector that he has Tuberculosis of the Lungs. His condition, and the circumstances lead me to recommend his immediate release from prison."

    The lot also includes attractive print of Lincoln in a seated pose, 15" x 12.5", signed in pencil by the artist in the bottom margin.

    Condition: Light toning throughout. Lincoln's note is mounted on thick cardstock. The related letter has mounting remnants at margins.
