Description
Abraham Lincoln Autograph Letter Signed "A. Lincoln." One page, 7.5" x 4", Springfield, Illinois; March 25, 1852. Addressed to Hon. William Thomas, regarding business in Shawneetown. It reads in full: "I learn you have returned from Shawneetown; and I am anxious to hear what discoveries you made in my matters there. Will you please drop me a line? Yours as ever." Lincoln had worked on a legal case, Dorman v. Lane, which involved the sale of real estate in Shawneetown to cover a debt. A Shawneetown lawyer had contacted Lincoln to take the case to the Supreme Court in 1842, and as payment, Lincoln received a mortgage to 160 acres near Shawneetown, which he then sold in April of 1853. It is possible that this matter is what Lincoln refers to in his letter to Thomas.Condition: Flattened mail folds, with light uneven toning and soiling. Mounted to backing paper, with additional mounting residue on verso. Boldly signed by Lincoln.
