Abraham Lincoln Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 9.5", Springfield Illinois, June 9, 1857. Addressed to Charles A. Purdy, Esq. In full: "Dear Sir, Yours of the 5th was duly received. The Register of the Land office here tells me that no patents come to this office made at the other offices. Before they were all concentrated here. He says the way for you to get your Patents is to send the Receipts or Certificates to the General Land Office, with your address, and the Patents will be forwarded directly to your address. Accordingly, I enclose the Receipts to you. I also enclose the other document, with the Certificate of our Secretary of States attached, as you desired. I am glad the Sniffin v. Harris suit is likely to be settled. A. Lincoln."

Interesting legal content from a good source. Eight years earlier (March 10, 1849) Lincoln had applied for a patent for a "new and improved manner of combining adjustable buoyant air chambers with a steamboat or other vessel for the purpose of enabling their draught of water to readily lessened to enable them to pass over bars, or through shallow water, without discharging their cargoes." He was awarded U.S. Patent No. 6,489 by the Patent Office (May 22, 1849) for "buoying vessels over shoals." It was the first and only patent obtained by a President, though the device was never put into practical use. Letter is lightly toned. Minor paper restoration and faint glue remnant on verso.
