    Description

A letter of introduction for "Mr. George Weston... the editor of the Republic, the first Republican paper established here"

Abraham Lincoln Autograph Letter Signed as President. One page on plain, lined paper, 5" x 8", "Executive Mansion, May 4, 1861." Docketed on verso. In office just two months -- and two short weeks after the attack at Fort Sumter -- President Lincoln addressed this letter to Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase to make an introduction.

The letter reads in full: "My dear Sir, This introduces Mr. George M. Weston, whom now you may remember as that of the editor of the Republic, the first Republican paper established here, I believe. Will you please give him a few minutes of your valuable time. Yours very truly, A. Lincoln."

Weston was a lawyer and a newspaperman in Augusta, Maine, who later edited the Washington Republican in the nation's capitol. Several months after this letter was written, Weston would again be in contact with the president, attempting to secure an appointment for his brother, Charles Weston. Charles hoped to serve as a military storekeeper, and the president attempted to secure such an appointment for him through Secretary of War Simon Cameron. Boldly penned and quite attractive, the letter shows very faint toning.
