Description
Abraham Lincoln Autograph Endorsement Signed. Found on the verso of a one page letter, 7.75" x 9.75" (sight), Washington, January 24, 1862, addressed to President Lincoln from representatives of the U.S. House of Representatives for the state of Kentucky requesting "the appointment of George P. Webster . . . to the place of Brigade Quartermaster in the Volunteer Service of the United States." Signed by seven Kentucky congressmen. The following day, the president placed the following endorsement on the verso: "These are most ample recommendations; and I shall be pleased with the appointment of the applicant when it can be consistently be made. [signed] A. Lincoln Jan. 25, 1862." Lightly soiled along the folds. Matted and framed to a size of 16" x 14.5". That frame is then attached with hinges (enabling the viewer to view the original letter) to a larger frame matted with a photograph of Lincoln to an overall size of 38.75" x 21.75".Webster was a member of the Kentucky legislature and a captain in the volunteer army prior to his appointment as quartermaster. This endorsement is not found in The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln.
