Abraham Lincoln Autograph Endorsement Signed "A. Lincoln" as president during the first months of the Civil War. One page, 3.5" x 7.75" (sight), n. p. [Washington], August 28, 1861. Writing in response to a letter he has received from General David Hunter (also included) whereby the general proclaims that "...a great injury has been done to a very worthy gentleman, Capt. Geo. C. Cram, lately appointed in my Regiment of Cavalry." He goes on to ask Lincoln whether he will "...have the kindness to see him..." Lincoln writes a short note in response which reads, in full: "The Mr. Cram spoken of by Genl. Hunter is the same as I understand whose reappointment I directed at the request of Senator Harris."

General David Hunter (1802-1886) was instrumental in the enlistment of black troops during the Civil War. He organized the first black regiment from freed slaves in South Carolina, the 1st South Carolina (African Decent). He would later serve in the honor guard at the funeral of President Lincoln and as president of the military commission that tried the conspirators of the assassination.

Aside from some light toning, the note is in fine condition and is matted and framed with an oval, engraved portrait of Lincoln, an engraved portrait of General David Hunter, and both sheets of the original, four page letter (pages two and three are obscured due to the framing) to Lincoln from Hunter to an overall size of 34.25" x 30.25".

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
