    Description

Abraham Lincoln Autograph Endorsement Signed on Verso of a Petition Concerning the Establishment of Another Pension Agency in Illinois. Lincoln's signed endorsement appears on the verso of bifolium, 7.75" x 12.5", Springfield, Illinois; July 25, 1864. The original petition and signatures fill the first two pages. Submitted and signed by Governor Richard Yates and eight others that they "...are of the opinion that another agency, besides the ones at Chicago and Springfield, is unnecessary, as the agencies are sufficient to transact all the business connected with the pension department...The cost of maintaining another agency would be considerable, amounting to several thousand dollars more than would otherwise be expended, and under present circumstances of our country, the most rigid economy ought to be observed in public expenditure...". A list of the counties proposed to be removed from service by the Springfield agency are listed on page three.

On verso, Lincoln has signed the document and added his own note, writing: "Will the Commission or Pensions please see and hear my friend and fellow townsman, Mr. Conkling, on the subject of the written paper? A Lincoln." Lincoln's signature is bold and clear.

Condition: Usual mail folds with some light toning and soiling along folds and edges. Two small to medium tears do not affect the signature or the legibility of the text. A few small areas of tape remain affixed along all edges, with some staining. Bits of paper loss along exterior margins not affecting any text.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
