Description

Abraham Lincoln Autograph Document Signed twice "Weldon & Lincoln p.d." No place or date (docketed May 1856), three-quarters page, folio, on blue paper. In John H. Lisk vs Frederick Morford, the defendant makes a general plea that he is "not guilty...as...alledged" and that the allegations are "not sufficient in law" to sustain the plaintiff. An interesting penciled endorsement on the verso, in an unknown hand, concerns instructions given to the jury in this case. They direct that "unless the jury believe that the defendant was, in fact, the owner of the dogs alleged to have done the injury...they must find for the defendant", and that "if liable at all, the criterion of damages is the market value of the ewes killed, at the time..." Soiled folds, with some old glassine repairs. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
