Abraham Lincoln. Autograph Document Signed "Lincoln & Hill for Respondent". De Witt Co. [Ill.], no date [docketed March 1859], one page, folio, on ruled paper. The separate answer of John F. Wellen "to a bill in chancery exhibited against him and others...by Harvey H. Merriman and Jesse G. Woodward…" Having "read the answer of his co-defendant, DeWitt C. Jones," Wellen "adopts the same so far as applicable to him" and "admits the lumber sold by him to said DeWitt C. Jones, was as charged in complainant's bill, purchased by respondent with money obtained from said Snell under the contracts mentioned in complainant's bill. Respondent denies all fraud and combination charged…[and] prays to be…discharged with his reasonable costs." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
