Description
Abraham Lincoln. Autograph Document Signed "Conkling & Lincoln p.d." No place or date [Clinton Co., Ill., April 1846], one page, oblong large octavo. In William Mitchell vs Daniel Newcomb, the defendant declares "he did not undertake and promise in manner and form as the…plaintiff…hath alleged… " Lincoln has also written, at lower left, the response from the plaintiff's attorney, David Davis, and signed for him ("And the plff. doth the like / D. Davis p.q."). Lincoln was very close to Davis, who as a circuit court judge heard hundreds of his cases during the 1850's; on at least a few occasions Lincoln even sat in for Davis on the bench. In 1860 Davis adroitly managed to secure Lincoln the Republican Presidential nomination, and in turn was appointed by Lincoln an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.Auction Info
