    Description

Abraham Lincoln. Autograph Document Signed "Bachman & Lincoln, p.d." No place or date [Menard Co., Ill.; docketed June 1841], one page, oblong octavo. In Edward Potter vs John Bell, the defendant states he is "not guilty of the…supposed trespass…in manner and form as the said plaintiff hath in his declaration complained…" Records show that this case involved a brown mare which Bell stole, but Potter recovered. After a jury failed to agree, arbitrators awarded Potter one cent damages and ordered Bell to pay the costs. This document also bears an endorsement in the name of attorneys "Urquhart & Rutledge", the latter being David H. Rutledge, who served in the Black Hawk War under Lincoln and was a brother of his legendary love, Ann Rutledge. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
