[Zachary Taylor] Ichabod Goodwin Archive of Letters. Collection of six letters, four addressed to Ichabod Goodwin and two mentioning him. Goodwin, a master and part owner of several ships, was a successful Portsmouth merchant and the owner of two railroads, two banks, the Portsmouth Steam Factory, a textiles manufactory. He served in the 1840s as a Massachusetts State Representative. He later served as governor of the state of New Hampshire (1859-61).

Spanning the years 1848-1850, these letters contain interesting information about the Whig Party's endeavor to nominate Zachary Taylor as a presidential candidate, as well as one addressed to President Taylor, extending an invitation to visit Portsmouth, Massachusetts (Goodwin's home base). Ichabod Goodwin, who was a state representative, was deeply involved in Taylor's nomination. He acted as a delegate at large from New Hampshire to the national conventions at which Henry Clay, Zachary Taylor, and Winfield Scott were nominated by the Whigs for the presidency. The letters were written by others who worked with Goodwin to get Taylor elected, including Charles Cutter, G. B. Cummings, and Charles Bigelow. Interesting political commentary regarding "Old Zach." Letters range in condition from poor to fine.
