Description

[War of 1812]. James Madison Marine Corps Appointment Signed "James Madison". One vellum page, partially printed, 14" x 17" (sight), Washington, August 1, 1812, with handsome engraved military and patriotic vignettes and countersigned by Paul Hamilton as Secretary of the Navy, appointing "James Lewis Edwards...a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in the service of the United States." With the embossed Seal of the Department of the Navy at the bottom edge. Lightly soiled folds. Vellum is rubbed at the location of the date. Ink is slightly faded; Madison's signature is faded slightly, but still legible. Wrinkling of the document at top right. Framed to an overall size of 16" x 19".
