War of 1812 Jackson Pay Requisition "for the transportation of the sick... who were part of the Detachment under my command"
[War of 1812]. Andrew Jackson Pay Requisition Signed. Two pages, 13.25" x 7.75", Nashville, April 23, 1813. In November 1812, Jackson, a major general in command of a division of the Tennessee Volunteers totaling some two thousand men, was ordered south to defend the port city of New Orleans. When he reached Natchez in what is now Mississippi, he received word from the War Department that he and his men were no longer needed and he would be required to dismiss them without pay. Angered, Jackson vowed to personally finance the journey back to Nashville if needs be. Giving his own horses for the benefit of the sick, Jackson walked the entire way back up the Natchez Trace with his men, enduring the same hardships and dispensing both encouragement and discipline when needed. Impressed, his men gave him the nickname "Old Hickory."Having returned to Nashville, Jackson had this requisition drawn up to repay one Edward Mitchell, the owner of Mitchell's Stand, who has countersigned on the verso. Stands were the locations of inns or trading posts along the Natchez Trace and Edward Mitchell had provided assistance to Jackson and his men on their return journey. It reads: "To Seventeen days hauling of the sick and their Baggage from Mitchells stand in the Chactaw [sic] Nation of Indians to the Tennessee River, they being part of the detachment of Tennessee Volunteers under Genl. A. Jackson. A $10 per day, being performed by two waggons [sic]. To 16 days hauling from the Tennessee River to Nashville by two wagons, eight days each at three dollars per day." The total, minus "Deductions [$19.25] for finding the waggon Horses," comes out to $198.75 and Jackson requests that "The assistant Depy qr. master will pay Edward Mitchell the above sum of one hundred & ninety eight dollars & seventy five cents, it being for the transportation of the sick & their Baggage who were part of the Detachment under my command." Docketed on the verso.
Folds are weakened with separation, but have been archivally repaired on the verso. Right edge is chipped throughout with some minor loss of paper, none of which affects the text. Areas of ink burning in the body of the document and two small pinholes in Jackson's signature, which is bold and bright. Light toning, particularly along the folds and edges. Slight ink ghosting on the recto from folding.
