    [John Quincy Adams] Naval General Order Death Announcement. Two pages, printed on first page recto only 8" x 10", n.p., February 24, 1848. Headed "General Order, Navy Department." Issued by John Young Mason as secretary of the navy.

    In full: "The President of the United States, with deep regret, announces to the Navy and to the Marine Corps, the death of John Quincy Adams, our eminent and venerated fellow-citizen. While occupying his seat as a member of the House of Representatives, on the 21st Instant, he was suddenly prostrated by disease, and on the 23rd expired, without having been removed from the Capitol. He had filled many honorable and responsible stations in the service of his country, and among them, that of President of the United States, and he closed his long and eventful life in the actual discharge of his duties as one of the Representatives of the people. From sympathy with his relatives and the American People for his loss, and from respect for his distinguished public services, the President orders that funeral honors shall be paid to his memory at each of the Navy Yards and Naval Stations, and on board all the public vessels in commission, by firing twenty-one minute guns, beginning at 12 o'clock, M., on the day after this communication is received, by carrying their flags half-mast for one week, and by the Officers wearing crepe on the left arm for six months." Signed in print "J. Y. Mason" as secretary of the navy, a post he held from March 1844 to March 1845, and again from September 1846 to March 1849.
