Jack Hays' letter of introduction given to him by President Polk

[John Coffee "Jack" Hays]. James K. Polk Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 8.25", Washington, March 18, 1847. In February 1847, Texas Governor J. Pinckney Henderson sent Texas Ranger, Col. John Coffee "Jack" Hays, commander of the First Regiment, Texas Mounted Riflemen, to Washington to beg President James K. Polk to send more troops to Texas for added protection. Following his meeting with the president, Polk penned this letter to his secretary of war, William L. Marcy, stating:

"Col. J. C. Hays of Texas is the bearer of the accompanying letter to me from the Governor of Texas. Col Hays will call on you this morning, and I think it important that you should have an interview with him."

The dashing Texas Ranger was an instant hit in Washington. Due in no small part to Hays' charisma, Polk raised additional troops for duty on the frontier of Texas. Folds, else fine. Matted with an engraved portrait of Polk and framed to an overall size of 19.5" x 14.5".
