[James Garfield]. Charles Guiteau Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 10", New York, June 9, 1873, on letterhead reading, "Charles J. Guiteau, Attorney and Counselor . . . New York." Guiteau, just eight years before shooting President Garfield, writes this letter to "Reis Brothers & Co." of Cincinnati about a collection. Guiteau had directed his own attorneys "to collect the balance due on that Hussleburghton[?] claim." Guiteau further states that the attorneys had stated "that it will take several months to collect it & Upon the receipt of the balance I will send you my check for your share of the proceeds." Docketed on the reverse. The paper is age-toned with some staining in the upper left corner.

Guiteau was not a successful attorney; most of his business came from bill-collecting cases such as this one. After failing to obtain suitable government employment in Washington, he became frustrated and shot and fatally wounded President James Garfield on July 2, 1881. Guiteau was immediately arrested and sent to jail to await a hearing as the president languished for over two months, finally dying on September 19, 1881. Guiteau hung on June 30, 1882. From the Donald P. Dow Collection.
