[Henry Clay]. John F. Kennedy Autograph Draft Notes for a Speech Delivered on April 30, 1957. Two pages, 5" x 8", undated. The manuscript reads: "The Comm[ittee] has met and made its final selections and I read you their names in order of selection of seniority in Senate service. Henry Clay of K[entucky]. He comes first from point of service... Henry Clay was an extraordinarily gifted politician and statesman political figure. He would not only be one among many but of the 5 greatest Speakers of the House of Rep[resentatives] over which he presided with skill & judgement. He was an Asst. Secy. of State. He was a determined dominant party leader. He was a brilliant orator whose effectiveness was heightened by extraordinary activity and a unique gift of warming the hearts of his country men. Lincoln called him the best ideal of a statesman."Kennedy headed a Senate committee to select five exemplary past Speakers of the house, whose portraits would hang in the Senate reception room. The manuscript offered here are Kennedy's notes for the passage addressing Henry Clay.
Clay has the distinction of being chosen Speaker of the House on the very first day of his very first session, and this at the age of 35; making him the youngest Speaker to date. Accomplishments that bear comparison to Kennedy's own accomplishments; Kennedy was 36 when he became a Senator in 1953, and is to date, the youngest president elected to office. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.
Condition: Very clean and near fine. Written on two separate sheets.
