[George Washington's Biography] The New-England Almanack 1782, 24 pages, 4" x 6.5". By Edmund Freebetter. New London: Printed and Sold by T. Green. Uneven edges, tears repaired on the first leaf, both sides, with archival tape. Soiled covers. Page 17 is headed "The following Sketch of General Washington's Life and Character, has been printed in a Pamphlet in England, for the Benefit of the American Prisoners confined there; with a poetical Epistle prefixed thereto. Wrote by an Inhabitant of the State of Maryland." The Sketch is dated "Maryland, May 3d 1779," and appears on pages 17-21.More Information:
n Annapolis, Maryland, in 1779, a"A poetical epistle to His excellency George Washington, Esq. commander in chief of the armies of the United States of America, from an inhabitant of the state of Maryland. By Charles Henry Wharton. To which is annexed, a short sketch of General Washington's life and character. By John Bell of Md." Iwas reprinted in London in 1780 and in this "Almanack." John Bell's Sketch is the first biography of George Washington ever published. In it he writes "I think I may venture to pronounce that General Washington will be regarded by mankind as one of the greatest military Ornaments of the present Age, and that his Name will command the Veneration of the latest Posterity."
