    Description

[Battle of Fort Donelson]. Ulysses S. Grant Endorsement Signed. One page, 5" x 8", Fort Donelson [Tennessee], February 17, 1862. One day after the capture of Fort Donelson, Col. John P. Cook, himself a future brigadier general then in command of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, here orders Lt. William Brown Jr. of the 7th Illinois Infantry to "immediately proceed to Cairo [Illinois] and take possession of & report to this command all transportation belonging to 7th Regt - forthwith." Directly below Cook's signature, Grant, commanding Union forces which captured the fort, has written: "Approved / U.S. Grant / Brig. Gen." Folds. Light waterstaining at the upper right corner and right edge. With the original transmittal envelope and an unused Confederate quartermaster form taken from the fort.

One of the first great victories for the United States, Grant's success at Fort Donelson, coupled with the surrender of Fort Henry ten days earlier, was a disaster for the South. Kentucky was now firmly under Union control and Tennessee was open for a Federal invasion. Grant was promoted to major general of volunteers and he had gained the nickname "Unconditional Surrender" Grant.

One month after helping to force the surrender of Fort Donelson, John Cook (1825-1910) received a promotion to brigadier general of volunteers and was transferred to Washington, D.C., to see assist in the capital's defenses. Later that year <1862), he was placed in command of the Department of Iowa and Dakota Territory where he began operations against the Sioux. Toward the end of the war, he commanded the military District of Iowa and mustered out of service in August 1865.
