[Abraham Lincoln] James Livingston Autograph Letters (Four) Signed concerning the assassination and funeral of President Lincoln. All letters are Civil War-dated (or shortly thereafter): One letter is dated 1864 (December 12) and the other three are dated 1865 (April 24, April 29, and July 8). Totaling sixteen pages, all are written from Elmira, New York, by Paymaster's Clerk James P. Livingston to his father, Captain Robert W. Livingston of the 118th New York. In the April 24 letter, written only nine days after the death of the president, James informs his father that "the death of the President made it very gloomy here for a while and for three or four different days, business was all closed. . . . On our way home [from Williamsport, Pennsylvania] we found a terribly excited crowd at the Depot. The Provost Marshal there had been notified that it was thought Boothe was on the train and the people had got wind of it, and were there to meet us. the doors of the cars were locked and no one allowed to get off until a thorough search had been made. I was glad I did not answer to his description." On April 29, he writes that "the Rebel prisoners here are to be released as fast as they can be paroled. . . . What do you think about their toting Lincoln's corpse around to make a show of? It seems mighty foolish for a civilized nation to me and I reckon it will be sheered at not a little by Foreign Nations." On July 8 he asks his father, "What do you think of the hanging-bee at Washington yesterday? Mrs. Surratt thought it rather severe not to give her only one day to trim her lamps in; but I reckon if she had had a week she would never have got them burning bright enough to save her. I guess she has gone to the sulphurous climate, straight." The final letter contains interesting content on suffragette and abolitionist Anna Dickinson.
