[Abraham Lincoln]: James A. Garfield's Copy of House Assassination Report Together with Free Frank. 8.25" x 3.25" goldenrod envelope with "J. A. Garfield" Free Frank as Congressman, sent to J. P. Alexander of Akron. It originally contained a "public document" (no longer present), likely one of Garfield's speeches. Light soiling, cut somewhat close along right edge, not affecting signature. Sold together with Garfield's personal copy of "Reports of Committees. 1st Sess. 39th Cong. Vol. 1 1865-'66." The 500-page volume contains "Report No. 104" on the assassination of President Lincoln and the possible implication of Jefferson Davis in the conspiracy. Garfield's book plate appears on the inside cover, inscribed "Inter Folia Fructus/ Library of/ James A. Garfield/ No." This book was from Garfield's library at his Lawnfield estate. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of Garfield's books were de-accessioned, including this volume. Calf skin binding with light scuffing, front hinge shaken, minor loss to top of spine, some warping, internally sound.
