    Description

    [Abraham Lincoln]. Invitation to Ride President Lincoln's Funeral Train, signed by Assistant Adjutant General Edward D. Townsend. One partly-printed card, 4.5" x 3.25", Washington, April 20, 1865. The invitation was issued by the War Department and addressed to "Mr. L. L. Crounse . . . to accompany the remains of the late President Abraham Lincoln from the City of Washington to Springfield, Illinois." Crounse worked as a war correspondent for the New York Times. This invitation was issued five days after the president's death. At 8 a.m. on April 21, the funeral train departed Washington, D.C., carrying the president's body and only those allowed by the War Department. It arrived at Springfield on May 3. Slight, faint spotting; minor staining on the reverse.
