    Abolitionist Hiram Barney (1811-1895) has signed a slip of paper that is affixed to the title page, suggesting that this was his copy. Barney was a supporter of Republican candidate Lincoln and he attended the Republican National Convention in Chicago in 1860. After Lincoln's election, he appointed Barney collector of the Port of New York.
