    Description

Timothy Pickering Autograph Letter Signed as Secretary of State "Timothy Pickering." One page, 8" x 10", n. p, March 21, 1796, to President George Washington concerning "the claims of the Cohnawaga, or Seven Nations of Canada, with the draught of a letter which he thinks proper to go from the department of war, with the report, to the Governor of New York." The Seven Nations were an Indian confederacy of Mohawk, Abenaki, Huron, and Onodaga that supported the French during the French and Indian War, and later the British in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Also included is an engraved portrait of Pickering by T. B. Welch. Elegantly written with only slight toning; the signature is bold. Very fine.
