Three Significant-Content Letters Signed by Important Massachusetts Senator Henry Cabot Lodge (1850-1924) All on U.S Senate letterhead, and dating from 1898, 1909, and 1911. Each approximately 8.0" x 11.0" size, and in very fine condition with minor pencil notations. All three are written to a Prof. William Sedwick at M.I.T. The first, dated April 5, 1898, apparently refers to a letter Sedwick had sent which might have affected a bill already passed by the Senate. It presumably had to do with foreign affairs, for Lodge Concludes, "Everyone feels with you, I am sure, that if it can possibly be obtained we want peace with honor, and I have been doing all I can to help the President in this direction, but it looks very much as if, owing to the attitude of Spain, we could not avoid a conflict." The second declines to sign an Anti-Woman Suffrage petition as a matter of procedure, but assures Sedwick that "I have been always openly and publicly opposed to Woman Suffrage..." The third refers to a brief Sedwick had sent him regarding a Senate bill. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
