    Thomas Sumter Manuscript Document Signed "Thos Sumter," one page, 6.25" x 7.75", tipped at left edge to a 7" x 8.5" card. No place, August 14, 1783. In full, "Thomas Sumter the Plaintiff in this action being duly sworn maketh Oath that the Defendant Caleb Gayle is justly indebted to him in the Sum of Eighty Eight Spanish Milled Dollars and upwards due by joint promissory note." Beneath "Sworn before me": "this 14th day of Augt. 1783/David Rogers, J.P." Spanish dollars (also known as "pieces of eight") were silver coins, each worth eight reales (Spanish currency). It was legal tender in the United States until an Act of Congress discontinued the practice in 1857. Thomas Sumter fought in the French and Indian War and in the Revolutionary War. Elected a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1783, the year this document was signed, he declined to serve. Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor is named for him. Light stain at upper left from remnant on verso of red wax seal used before mailing. Fine condition.
