    Description

    Thomas Jefferson Scalloped-Top Sea Passport Signed "Th: Jefferson" as president. One partially-printed vellum page, 10.5" x 14.25", [Washington], October 29, 1804, countersigned by James Madison as secretary of state, allowing "the Brig Antelope of New York William Bowman master or commander of the burthen of One Hundred fifty five & 72/95 tons or thereabouts mounted with no guns . . . To pass with her Company Passengers Goods and Merchandize without any hindrance, seizure or molestation." Maritime vignettes at the top of the document and a blind-embossed paper seal in the lower left corner. Jefferson and Madison's signatures are faded slightly. Minor soiling. Scattered spots of light foxing. Folds, with one small hole along one fold.
