Thomas Jefferson Land Grant Signed "Th: Jefferson" and countersigned by James Madison as secretary of state. One partly-printed vellum page, 16" x 8.75", "City of Washington", October 12 1805, granting Benjamin Van Cleve of Hamilton County, Ohio, "Six Lots in the Town of Dayton . . . lying between he Great Miami river and the Virginia reservation, sold under the direction of the Register of the Land office at Cincinnati, by virtue of the right of pre-emption granted by law to certain persons who have contracted with John Cleves Lymmes or his associates." With a blind-embossed paper seal in the lower left corner and docketing on the verso. Some wrinkling to the document. Handwriting, including Jefferson's signature, has faded, though all is legible.

Together with a postal appointment (signed by Gideon Granger, 1803); a Dayton Academy stock certificate (1809); and a military receipt for horse foraging (1813). All items are fragile and engrossed to Benjamin Van Cleve. Van Cleve helped found Dayton in 1796 and became its first postmaster. According to tradition, he was the father of the first male of European decent born in Dayton, John W. Van Cleve.
