Thomas Jefferson Green Military Appointment Thrice Signed, twice as "Th: Jef: Green" and once as "Thos. P. Green" as "Brigadier General of the Army of the Republic of Texas." One page, 7.75" x 10.75", n.p., July 17, 1836. Green appoints James H. Milroy "Major of my brigade; having full and ample authority so to do from David G. Burnet, President of the Republic of Texas and his Cabinet Council." Below his first signature, Green writes, "Accepted Thos. J. Green. Brig. Genl. Texas Army." One signature is part of an endorsement on the verso that reads, "July 17th 1836 I hereby certify the full requisitions of the same has been complied with according the proclamation of President Burnett [sic], upon the subject. [Signed] Th: Jeff: Green. Brig Genl. Texas Army." James Milroy was the uncle of Union General Robert H. Milroy. The document is toned with folds and minor stains. The lower margin is wrinkled and chipped. A small repaired tear narrowly misses Green's second signature.

West Point graduate Thomas Jefferson Green (1802-1863) moved to Texas in early 1836. After joining the Texas cause, he was commissioned a brigadier general and raised volunteers in the U.S. Following the successful Texas revolution, he participated in the Somervell Expedition in 1842 and was second-in-command on the Mier Expedition. He surrendered to General Ampudia and was imprisoned at Perote Prison, from which he escaped and returned to Texas. Later in life he left Texas for California.
