    Description

    Thomas Jefferson Four-Language Ship's Papers Signed "Th: Jefferson" and countersigned by Secretary of State James Madison. One partly-printed page, 20.5" x 16.25" (sight), New York, May 21, 1804. This ship's passport, printed in French, Spanish, English, and Dutch, authorizes passage for "...Joseph Parke of New York master or commander of the Ship called the Commerce of the burthen of 221 13/95 tons or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of New York bound for Nantz and laden with Ashes, Tobacco, Nankeens, Pimento, Rice, Coco of Cordials, Cotton, Whale oil..." Two paper seals in the lower left. Jefferson's signature is bold. Slight separation and folding of the vertical fold. Some soiling along the edges. Matted and framed to an overall size of 33.25" x 33.25".
