Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson: Pass Made Out to His Photographer. 5" x 3.5" printed and manuscript pass filled out and signed by "T. J. Jackson" on November 7, 1862 (affixed to an album page). It authorizes Nathaniel Routzan [sic] to pass through the lines to Martinsburg. Routzahn photographed Jackson in his Winchester, Virginia gallery on November 1, 1862. Jackson was missing a button on his jacket, so sewed one on crookedly before being photographed. A minister who accompanied Jackson to the sitting joked that while Jackson could successfully track down and destroy enemy forces, he was unable to perform the simple task of sewing a button in a straight line. Routzahn often crossed over into Maryland to obtain photographic supplies and was once arrested as a blockade runner. Jackson took the time to personally complete this form, one week after being photographed, likely to facilitate the photographer's job. Sold with a Bendann copy image of the original portrait and a modern postcard with the same image.
From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
