Theodore Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed "Theodore Roosevelt", one page, 6.5" x 8", New York, August 5, 1910, to Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell, regarding the controversy of vaccination. In part: "I wish I could have written more at length about Wood. What an extraordinary thing it is that there should [be] such opposition to vaccination! I can't understand it. Whether I can make the time to write an article on the matter, I don't know..." Factions both in favor and opposed to vaccination were equally active, and articles citing statistical proof of the benefits and harm of vaccination appeared regularly. In 1909, the United States Army approved voluntary vaccination for typhoid fever, which through the efforts of Major General Leonard Wood (to whom Roosevelt may be referring in this letter) would become mandatory for all soldiers in 1911. Ironically, Dr. Mitchell's most notable contribution to the medical field was his 'rest cures' for maladies of the nerves and hysteria; 'illnesses' suffered largely by women. Mitchell's treatment included a strict regime of bed rest, massages, and dieting. With a single holographic edit in Roosevelt's hand and a bold signature; in fine condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
