Theodore Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed "Theodore Roosevelt". Two pages, 5.25" x 6.75", Washington, D.C.; April 6, 1898. Writing as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Roosevelt addresses a short letter to Vermont Senator Redfield Proctor. It reads in full:

"My dear Senator: I no longer envy Lodge his Havana cigars, due to his championship of the insurgents, now that I get such delicious maple syrup. I thank you very much. I have a great fondness for maple syrup! Do let me again say how I have admired what you have done during the last month. I only hope we shall now reap the fruit of it, and that there will be shilly-shallying. The time has come to strike straight from the shoulder. Faithfully yours, Theodore Roosevelt."

During his tenure as Secretary of War, Proctor made numerous changes to the management of the Army that not only brought it up to modern standards but also improved the living conditions of its soldiers. Proctor would later play a role in influencing military policy under Roosevelt's own administration.

Condition: Flattened fold, with light toning at the edges and some faint soiling throughout. Small separated at fold. The ink in Roosevelt's signature has bled slightly in areas, else good.
