Theodore Roosevelt Signed Book: Theodore Roosevelt. America and the World War. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1915. First edition. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To John N. Wheeler, to whom these articles are partly due. With the best wishes of the writer, Theodore Roosevelt/June 1st 1915." 12mo, 277 pages. John N. Wheeler's bookplate on front pastedown. John N. Wheeler (1886-1973) was a journalist and author who served in France during the First World War as a lieutenant of artillery. Chipped spine and overall toning.

With the eruption of the First World War, Roosevelt heartily supported the Allied effort at thwarting German aggression and was an outspoken critic of President Woodrow Wilson's policy of neutrality. He states his position clearly in the foreword to his book , America and the World War: "Our country should not shirk its duty to mankind. It can perform this duty only if it is true to itself. It can be true to itself only by definitely resolving to take the position of the just man armed; for a proud and self-respecting nation of freemen must scorn to do wrong to others and must also scorn tamely to submit to wrong done by others."
