    Description

Theodore Roosevelt Autograph Letter Signed on a White House Card, 4" x 2.6"; June 13, 1906. A letter to a Mr. Leisheman: "Mr. Davenport is an awfully good fellow in every way. I hope that you can make a special effort to help him in his arab horse scheme; and any courtesy you can show him I shall accept as personal. Sincerely yours T. Roosevelt."

Mr. Davenport is likely Homer Davenport, a political cartoonist who had favorably portrayed Roosevelt for the New York Evening Mail during the 1904 presidential campaign. With Roosevelt's assistance, Davenport was able to secure diplomatic permission to travel extensively and secure purchasing pure Arabian horses for breeding in the United States. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: Heavy toning; with light soiling and some wear. The ink remains quite bold.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
