This land grant for 313.5 acres in Red River County is countersigned by Francis M. White as commissioner of the General Land Office. The General Land Office embossed seal is in the lower left margin and the Texas state embossed seal is in the center of the lower margin. Minor separation holes at fold intersections. Clark's signature is bold with blossoming ink. Docketing on verso; some foxing and ink bleedthrough. A clerk's record (7.75" x 3") is attached to lower left corner of the recto.

    More Information:

Following the Mexican War, Clark served as the Texas secretary of state and later as lieutenant governor under Governor Sam Houston. After Texas seceded from the Union, Governor Houston refused to take an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy. As a result, he was removed from office and replaced by Clark, who served as the eighth governor of Texas for nine months. After the Civil War, he fled to Mexico for a short time.
