    Description

Sydney Smith Lee Autograph Letter Signed "S.S. Lee." One page, 7.75" x 8", Gosport, Virginia; August 26, 1863. Writing to D.J. Hartsook Esq., the Confederate Naval Captain sought how to best protect his money and stocks during the war. It reads, in full:

"I am much obliged to you for the check. It came in very good time. I am not so anxious now, to have the 'stock', turning over to me. I think perhaps having this war, it had better be in your hands, than mine. With best respects & kind regards and thanks for the trouble I am giving you. I signed the receipt & got the money. I am very respectfully. Yr. Obt. Serv. S.S. Lee.

PS. What did my lawyer do for me at the time of this last court? Did the case come up? S.S.L."

Condition: Usual mail folds, light toning and minor soiling throughout. Slightly uneven left vertical edge.
