Stuart Roosa Signed Letter and Color Apollo 14 Photo from the Files of Smilin' Jack Creator Zack Mosley. As most were originally aviators, many of the early astronauts were big fans of the Adventures of Smilin' Jack comic strip that ran from 1933 to 1973. Offered here from Zack Mosley's archives is a two-page typed letter, dated August 23, 1973, on NASA JSC letterhead to Mosley, signed: "Stuart A. Roosa". This was just a few months after the last Smilin' Jack strip appeared. Roosa writes, in part:

"...I have been an avid fan of 'SMILING JACK' ever since I was a small child. I have found many of my acquaintances in the flying game are also nostalgic about the days when SMILING JACK was operating crop dusters off dirt strips and FAT STUFF was popping the buttons for the chickens. In keeping with these memories, a group of us here in Houston have decided to have a "'SMILING JACK' party. This party will be held at a crop dusters strip about 40 miles from Houston. We will have pilots attending from all segments of the flying world -- NASA astronauts, crop dusters, aerobatic pilots, Confederate Air Force pilots, and some of those who own their own tail draggers but have to work outside of flying for a living. We will have an airshow by PITTS specials, Grumman Ag-Cats, and others, plus food, beer and music. Even plan to have some bales of cotton around the hangar just like the old days. Dress will be shorts for the cute little de-icers and white scarfs for all the pilots and would-be pilots..."

Roosa goes on to invite Mosley and his wife to this party with a tentative date of November 10, 1973, and asks if he would be willing to do some original art that could be reproduced for the invitations. It is unknown if Mosley attended the party but at the close of the letter, he has hand written addresses and phone numbers, presumably for him to get in touch with Roosa regarding the party. An official NASA biography is included with this letter which is lightly toned and in very fine condition. Also included with the lot is a 10" x 8" color NASA Apollo 14 litho crew photo signed "Edgar Mitchell/ Apollo 14" and "To Smiling Jack with Best/ Regards from Apollo 14/ Stuart A Roosa". Also very fine.
